McLean County, IL Animal Ordinances: Veterinary Clinic Zoning (2026)

The county's zoning code treats veterinary practice as too intensive for its home occupation track. R(1)(k) states that permitted home occupations shall not in any event include several categories, and veterinary clinics, kennels and stables is the eighth entry, grouped with physician and dental clinics as medical-type uses the county keeps out of residential home businesses altogether. The ban covers all three related uses in one clause, so a home-based veterinary clinic, a boarding kennel and a horse stable are treated identically for home occupation purposes even though they differ in scale.

R(1)(j); the exclusion applies regardless of how few animals are treated or how limited the hours are, since subsection (k) writes in no size, volume or scale threshold. A veterinary practice, kennel or stable instead must locate in a zoning district whose use table at § 350-42 lists it as a permitted or special use, following whatever setback, lot-size and site standards that district attaches. Chapter 350 applies only within the unincorporated county under § 350-4, so a veterinary clinic inside Bloomington or Normal is governed by that city's own zoning code.
