Katy's Food Trucks & Mobile Vendors: The Rules That Matter

By CityRuleLookup Editorial Team

Every city handles food trucks & mobile vendors a little differently. In Katy, Texas, there are 2 distinct rules that residents and property owners should be aware of. Some are stricter than what neighboring cities enforce, and others are more relaxed. Here is what you need to know.

Food Truck Permits

Katy requires every food truck and mobile food unit to obtain a city Mobile Food Vendor permit under Ordinance 3086, valid for one year. Operators must also display a current Harris County or Fort Bend County health permit before selling food in the city.

Key details: Ordinance: Ordinance 3086. Effective: June 1, 2023. Permit term: One year. Health permit: Harris or Fort Bend County. Apply at: 901 Avenue C.

Operating without a valid Katy mobile food vendor permit is a code violation subject to fines up to $2,000 per day under municipal court. Vendors may be ordered to cease operations until compliant.

Vending Zones

Katy limits stationary food truck operation to the M industrial district, with additional accessory-use allowances in the OKD Old Katy district. No more than two mobile food establishments may share a single location, and OKD trucks must sit behind a building and stay 300 feet from other vending sites.

Key details: Default district: M industrial only. OKD allowance: Accessory use behind building. OKD spacing: 300 feet between trucks. Per-site cap: Two trucks maximum. Exceptions: Right-of-way and special events.

Operating outside permitted zoning districts or violating distance and location rules can result in citations up to $2,000 per offense and revocation of the city mobile food vendor permit.

This is not one of those rules that cities tend to ignore. Katy actively enforces its vending zones requirements.

The Bottom Line

Katy's food trucks & mobile vendors rules are a mixed bag. Some areas are strict, others are relaxed, and the details matter. The best approach is to check the specific rule that applies to your situation rather than assuming Katy is broadly strict or permissive.
