Sec. 72-293(12) permits day care centers as a listed use under Article II's additional-regulations section, but conditions approval on the facility being 'designed and constructed according to the applicable state standards', meaning Florida licensing and building requirements govern construction, staffing and safety, on top of county zoning. Subsection (12)a adds a local compatibility test: the intensity of the facility, including its number of residents, must be compatible with the density and character of the surrounding residential area, giving the zoning enforcement official and approving body discretion to scale down a proposed center that would overwhelm a residential block.

Because day care centers appear throughout the county's zoning use tables cross-referenced back to this subsection, most classifications treat them as a conditional use or special exception rather than a use permitted outright, meaning a public hearing and site plan review before a center opens. Sec. 72-286(5)'s off-street parking table sets a specific site-design requirement tied to this use: day care facilities must provide two parking spaces per 1,000 square feet of gross floor area, though that ratio can be cut to one space per 1,000 square feet if the site instead provides a 24-foot-wide drop-off zone at the main entrance, a trade-off aimed at reducing car-count pressure in exchange for safer pick-up and drop-off circulation.
