Summary
Unincorporated Boone County, Kentucky requires an annual electrical permit, $25 per year, from the Boone County Building Department before any wiring installation, addition, alteration, repair, relocation or removal, per Code § 150.83. A licensed county Electrical Inspector must certify the work meets National Electrical Code standards and issue a certificate of approval before service is connected. Florence, Union and Walton enforce separate municipal rules.
(A) A certification of approval shall be obtained from a duly qualified Electrical Inspector for all work covered by any electrical permit or for any electrical work that is done within the County. Before a certification of approval is issued by an Electrical Inspector, the electrical work must meet the minimum standards of the National Electrical Code or other appropriate codes and ordinances as adopted by the Fiscal Court. (B) One copy of the certification shall be provided to the County Building Department by the Electrical Inspector within ten days after issuance.

Full Breakdown
Boone County's own Building Regulations chapter sets electrical permitting for the unincorporated county. 78, anyone doing electrical work, whether an electrical contractor, electrician, master electrician or owner-occupant, must obtain a certification of approval from a licensed county Electrical Inspector, and that work must first meet the minimum standards of the National Electrical Code or other codes and ordinances the Fiscal Court has adopted. One copy of that certification goes to the County Building Department within ten days of issuance. 83 sets the fee: an electrical permit runs $25 per year, obtained from the Boone County Building Department, and covers installation, addition, alteration, repair, relocation or removal of electrical wiring.
79, no electric, light or power company may connect or furnish current to any electrical installation in the county until the installation has been inspected and approved by an Electrical Inspector and a certificate of approval issued; that certificate must reach the Building Department within three days. 76(C), they must stay with that same inspector through completion of the job, and concealing wiring before inspection is prohibited. 80(B). These rules bind only the unincorporated parts of Boone County; Florence, Union and Walton administer electrical permitting under their own municipal codes.
Violations & Fines
Violating any provision of Chapter 150, including working without the required electrical permit or certificate of approval, is a misdemeanor under § 150.99: a fine of not less than $25 nor more than $250, up to 90 days in jail, or both, with each day of continued violation charged as a separate offense. Electricians who ignore the rules also risk county revocation of their occupational license under §§ 150.77 and 150.80.
