Collier County, FL Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Collier County enforces the Florida Building Code, Eighth Edition (2023), for electrical work countywide under Sec. 22-26, and Sec. 4 adds a detached single-family exemption list on top of the code's own permit rules. A licensed electrical contractor can perform repair work without a permit as long as the materials and labor don't exceed $1,500 in value; homeowners and their contractors can also swap out existing light fixtures and ceiling fans, replace wall switches and outlet devices rated 20 amps or less at 120 volts, and repair or replace low-voltage equipment operating under 77 volts, all without a permit.

The exemption applies only to detached single-family properties and their owners or hired licensed contractors, and it explicitly does not authorize any work done in a manner that otherwise violates the building code; anything above the $1,500 threshold, new circuits, service panel work, or wiring in multi-family or commercial buildings, still needs a permit, plan review under Sec. 1, and inspection. Separately, the general Sec. 2 exemption list covers only one narrow electrical item countywide: replacing a ceiling fixture using the existing outlet box and wiring where no fire-rated assembly is affected.
