East Baton Rouge Parish, LA Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

East Baton Rouge Parish administers electrical work through Title 8, Building Regulations, not a stand-alone electrical code. Sec. 8:100(a) adopts the International Building Code and International Residential Code as amended by the Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code Council (LSUCCC), and Sec. 8:100(b) makes it unlawful to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any electrical system regulated by the technical codes without first applying to the building official for a permit. Sec. 5 separately adopts the National Electric Code, as amended by the LSUCCC, to govern electrical work tied to repairs, alterations, change of occupancy, additions and relocations.

Sec. 8:500 restates the permit duty for any owner or authorized agent who intends to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace an electrical system. Fees are set parish-wide by Sec. 8:801(5)(c): a residential electrical trade permit costs $125, on top of any plan review fee for the underlying building work. A permit becomes invalid under Sec. 8:509 if work does not start within 180 days of issuance, or is suspended for 180 days once started, though the building official can grant written extensions of up to 180 days at a time on request. Sec. 8:511 requires the permit be posted at the jobsite in a conspicuous, accessible place until the project is finished.
