Maximum building height in unincorporated Lake County is set by each zoning district in the LDR. Accessory structures may not exceed the height of the dwelling unit or twenty-five feet, whichever is greater (LDR 10.01.01.E).
Principal building height limits are established district-by-district in Chapter III of the LDR. For residential accessory structures, LDR 10.01.01.E caps height at the height of the dwelling unit or 25 feet, whichever is greater. Accessory buildings must sit in side and rear yards unless they match the home's architecture, are a small front-yard type such as a gazebo, well cover, or mailbox enclosure of 100 square feet or less, or are set back at least 100 feet from the front line. Structures near communications towers and in the Green Swamp overlay face additional height rules. Cities set their own limits inside municipal boundaries.
Exceeding the district or accessory height limit without a variance is a code violation; Lake County may deny or revoke permits, require a Board of Adjustment variance, and impose corrective action and fines.
