Weld County, CO Business Licensing & Operations: Auto Repair on Residential Property (2026)

Weld County Code § 23-4-990 lets residents run limited home businesses only in the Agricultural (A), Residential (R), and Estate (E) zone districts. In R zones the business must be conducted entirely indoors; in A and E zones a lot must be at least one acre before any outdoor activity is allowed, and the Director of Planning Services can require a six-foot opaque privacy fence to screen it. Section 23-4-990(I) then lists 23 use categories the county will never approve as a home business, and VEHICLE SERVICE/REPAIR ESTABLISHMENTS is item 20, alongside vehicle sales and rental establishments, contractor's shops, and kennels.

Where a home business is otherwise allowed, § 23-4-1000 puts the Director of Planning Services in charge of approving or denying the zoning permit; the permit cannot be transferred to a new owner and terminates automatically when the property is conveyed or leased. A permit can be revoked for noncompliance or after three consecutive years without use, but the owner gets mailed notice and fifteen days to request a meeting with the Director before revocation, with a further appeal available under § 2-4-10. Under § 23-4-1010, employees of the Weld County Sheriff's Office, the Planning Department, and the Health Department may enter the property while the home business is open to confirm compliance.
