Full Breakdown

Sonoma County Code § 26-88-121(b)(3) lists 'automotive and other vehicle sales, repair, services, painting, storage, or upholstery, or the repair of engines, including automobiles, boats, motorcycles, trucks, or recreational vehicles' among the business activities flatly barred from operating as a home occupation in unincorporated county territory. The same ban carries over to live/work units (§ 26-88-122), work/live units (§ 26-88-124), and mixed-use developments (§ 26-88-123). The rule applies only outside the county's nine incorporated cities. Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Windsor, Healdsburg, Sebastopol, Cotati, Cloverdale, and the City of Sonoma each set their own home-based business rules.

Violations & Fines

County code enforcement can issue a stop-work or cease-operation order and administrative citations under § 1-7.6 for running a prohibited home occupation; the underlying zoning clearance can also be revoked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix cars for money in my home garage in unincorporated Sonoma County?
No. County Code § 26-88-121(b)(3) lists automotive repair, service, painting, storage, and upholstery work among the business activities expressly barred from operating as a home occupation anywhere in unincorporated Sonoma County.
Does this apply inside the City of Sonoma or Santa Rosa?
No: this is a county code provision that only governs unincorporated territory. The City of Sonoma, Santa Rosa, and the other seven incorporated cities each regulate home-based auto repair under their own municipal codes.
