Full Breakdown
Will County Code § 155-9.300 sets separate buffers by license type. Cultivation centers and craft growers may not locate within 2,500 feet of the property line of a preexisting preschool, elementary or secondary school, college, university, day care center or home, or an area zoned residential. Dispensing organizations, infuser organizations, and processing organizations face a shorter 1,000-foot buffer from the same protected uses. These zoning standards, adopted by Ord. 20-266 in 2020, apply only to unincorporated Will County; Joliet, Bolingbrook, Romeoville, Plainfield, and Lockport regulate cannabis businesses under their own municipal codes.
Violations & Fines
A site that doesn't clear the buffer isn't eligible for the special use permit or zoning certificate the county requires before a cannabis business can operate there; the Zoning Administrator denies the application, and operating without approval invites zoning enforcement action.
