RI home cultivators must tag every cannabis plant with their name and ID, secure the grow against minors, and keep plants out of public view; failure to tag is a separate civil violation.
Beyond the 6/12 plant caps, RI law imposes practical conditions on home grows. Each plant must bear a tag listing the cultivator's full legal name, date of birth, and (for medical patients) registration number β a measure inherited from the medical-marijuana program. Plants must be in a locked enclosure, room, or fenced area inaccessible to anyone under 21, and not visible from any public way or adjoining property. Renters must check their lease β landlords may forbid cultivation as a condition of tenancy. Providence enforces visibility complaints through Inspection and Standards; tagging compliance is verified by RICCC and law enforcement.
Untagged plants, plants visible from public space, or unsecured grows can result in civil fines and seizure even within the legal plant count.
