Ann Arbor provides once-a-week curbside trash and recycling collection to single-family and duplex homes, with weekly compost April through November (monthly in winter). Collection slips one day when a major holiday falls that week.

Residential Curbcart Customers receive once a week Refuse and Recycling collection provided by the City or its contracted hauler. Collection days are assigned on a geographic basis by the Public Services Area Administrator or their designee.
Ann Arbor carts must be at the curb before 7 a.m. on collection day (no more than 24 hours early), with the lid opening facing the street, at least 3 feet from any obstacle, and clear of branches or wires under 15 feet.

Residential Curbcart Customers shall place Refuse, Recyclables, and Compostables (seasonal) Curbcarts at the curb or designated collection site before 7 a.m. on the weekly collection day.
Ann Arbor won't collect large or bulky items in curbside carts. Furniture, mattresses, appliances, scrap metal and construction debris go to the Drop-Off Station or Wheeler Service Center for a fee; appliances carry a per-item Freon-removal fee.

These include pianos, garage doors, heavy metal parts, fuel and propane tanks, automobile, truck or other vehicular parts and tires. This also includes large construction debris, such as concrete, rocks, bricks, mortar, cement, tar, railroad ties, logs over 6 inches in diameter and tree stumps.
Ann Arbor residents must separate recyclables from trash and place them empty, rinsed and loose (not bagged) in the city cart. Commercial properties must participate in the city recycling program or file an approved annual compliance plan.

Residents must separate their Recyclables from their household Refuse and place them in the recycling collection container provided or approved by the City. Recyclables must not be mixed with refuse, compostables or garbage (food waste).
Dumping trash on public or private land is illegal in Michigan and Ann Arbor. Waste must be contained to prevent litter; littering and illegal dumping under Michigan's NREPA is a misdemeanor, and cleanup can be billed to the responsible party.

Solid Waste must be properly prepared for collection and contained inside approved Solid Waste Containers to avoid littering. Paper products and other loose debris must be covered to avoid blowing.
