Recreational drone operation in Suffolk County is strictly limited by FAA airspace. Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) is Class C airspace extending to 4,400 ft in a 5 NM core with 10 NM shelf. Francis S. Gabreski Airport (FOK) and East Hampton (HTO) impose further restrictions. LAANC authorization required in controlled airspace.
FAA Part 107 and Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) govern drone flight nationwide. ISP Class C airspace (Islip) requires LAANC pre-authorization via B4UFLY/Aloft/Airmap within the Class C ring; altitude ceilings drop to 0-100 ft near runway approach corridors in Ronkonkoma/Bohemia. Class D airspace at Gabreski (Westhampton) and East Hampton restricts flight within 4 NM. Suffolk County Code Chapter 575 prohibits launching/landing drones in county parks without special permit. New York State parks prohibit drone launch/landing under 9 NYCRR 376. Fire Island National Seashore bans drones under NPS rules. All Suffolk beaches prohibit drones during summer lifeguard hours under beach codes. Registration required for drones 250 grams to 55 lbs with FAA (5 dollar fee).
Flying in controlled airspace without LAANC: FAA civil penalty up to 27,500 dollars. Launch in county park: 500 dollars. State park violation: 250 dollars per 9 NYCRR 376. NPS citation at Fire Island: up to 5,000 dollars.
