Richardson Ch. 6, Art. IV governs all fence construction. Fences must be inspected after completion, maintained within 20% vertical alignment, and not built on public property or in easements without approval. The CZO controls over the fence article where conflicts exist.
Richardson's fence code (Ch. 6, Art. IV) includes multiple general requirements. Section 6-202 requires inspection after completion and ongoing maintenance: fences may not be out of vertical alignment more than 20%, damaged portions must be repaired with comparable materials, exterior supports may not be used, and sections must be securely attached to posts. Section 6-204 clarifies that the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance controls over the fence article if conflicts exist. Section 6-206 prohibits fences on public property. Section 6-207 prohibits fences within easements without prior written approval. Section 6-207(d) prohibits attaching fences to screening walls adjacent to public streets. Section 6-203 allows appeals of Building Official decisions to the Zoning Board of Adjustment.
Unmaintained fences result in Code Enforcement citations. Out-of-alignment, damaged, or unpermitted fences must be corrected. Fines up to $2,000.
