Corner-lot fences in Winston-Salem cannot exceed 3 feet in the intersection sight triangle. The triangle typically runs 15 to 25 feet from the corner along each street. Violations must be removed.
The Winston-Salem UDO includes sight-distance (visibility) triangle requirements for corner lots. Within the triangle formed by extending 15 to 25 feet from the intersection point of the two street rights-of-way along each street, no fence, wall, hedge, or other visual obstruction over 3 feet tall is permitted. Driveway sight triangles also apply: a smaller triangle at the point where a driveway meets the street requires the same 3-foot limit. Violations are commonly discovered when the city responds to a near-miss accident complaint or during routine traffic safety review. Trees with canopies above 8 feet are permitted within the triangle since they do not obstruct driver sight lines. Violations must be corrected within 30 days of notice.
