Rock Island County, IL Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

046(A) of the County Code governs fence, wall and hedge height outside the cities. Along a yard adjacent to a public street on R-1 or U-1 zoned property, the limit is 42 inches, and the top rail cannot sit between two and six feet above the roadway surface so it does not create a ground-level sight obstruction; the finished side of the fence must face the neighboring property. In side and rear yards generally, fences, walls and hedges cannot exceed six feet, with an exception for trimmed tree trunks and poles.

Fences may run right up to the property line, but on a corner or reversed corner lot they cannot enter the triangular area formed by the right-of-way lines and a line connecting points 25 feet from where those right-of-way lines intersect (or, for a rounded corner, from where the lines would intersect if extended). 046(A)(4) allows fences up to ten feet there. 044 separately bars any fence, structure or planting within 20 feet of a corner-lot property-line intersection in every district except B-2. 046(A)(6)-(7).
