In unincorporated Washoe County, fences, walls or perimeter planting max out at 4.5 feet in the required front-yard setback and 6 feet elsewhere on a residential lot. Cities of Reno and Sparks set their own limits.
Washoe County Development Code Section 110.406.50(a) caps residential fences, walls or perimeter planting at four-and-one-half (4.5) feet in the required front-yard setback and six (6) feet on the rest of the lot. On a corner lot, one frontage is the main entrance; other street frontages become modified side yards where a 6-foot fence is allowed if set at least 10 feet back from the property line. Barbed or razor livestock fencing in front yards is allowed only on lots larger than one acre. Commercial/industrial fences adjoining residential uses run 6 to 8 feet. These county standards apply only to unincorporated land, not inside Reno or Sparks.
Fences over allowed height are a Development Code violation subject to Washoe County code enforcement; correction or removal may be ordered and a building permit obtained.
