Aurora's fence and wall regulations are found in the Unified Development Ordinance Section 146-4.7.9. Standard permitted materials include brick, stone, decorative concrete masonry (CMU), wrought iron style and metal picket fences, ornamental iron, vinyl, masonry, pressure-treated wood, wood with natural resistance to decay, and chain link. Chain link fences are specifically prohibited in front yards and along any public right-of-way. For fences along arterial and collector streets, materials are restricted to brick, stone, decorative CMU, wrought iron style, and metal picket fences. Wood fences may be used along other public and private streets if they meet design standards. Electrically charged fences are prohibited, except battery-operated alarmed electric fences as specifically allowed in the ordinance. Barbed wire is prohibited except in Special Purpose districts, on construction sites, and for enclosing public or private utility installations. Concertina wire is prohibited except for government facilities approved by the Planning Director based on security needs. Sharp-pointed fences of any material are prohibited in residential districts, though picket fences under 6 feet 6 inches may have pointed tops if sawed or rounded to a blunt end.
Fences constructed with prohibited materials or in prohibited locations may be ordered removed or modified. Violations of the UDO fence regulations may result in code enforcement citations and fines.
