Austin prohibits barbed wire, razor wire, and electrified fences in residential zones under City Code Chapter 25-2. Hill Country Roadway corridors and historic districts impose additional material rules, and HOA covenants commonly specify wood or masonry.
Under Chapter 25-2 Subchapter F, barbed wire and razor wire are banned in residential zones (SF-1 through MF-6). They are allowed in industrial and agricultural zones with conditions β top strand must be at least 6 feet above ground, no overhang into pedestrian ROW. Electric fences require a permit and are generally prohibited where a residential use is within 150 feet. In Hill Country Roadway Corridors (HCRC) along Loop 360, FM 2222, and FM 2244, fences visible from the roadway must use natural materials β cedar plank, stone, stucco, or dark-finished metal β to preserve the scenic corridor. Historic districts (Hyde Park, Bremond Block, Castle Hill) require Historic Preservation Office review of fence design and material. Vinyl and PVC fences are allowed citywide but are disfavored in historic contexts. Chain-link is permitted in side/rear yards but not in front yards of SF zones. Texas Property Code Β§202.007 protects xeriscape-related fencing decisions from HOA override. Heritage Tree root zones (Chapter 25-8) must be respected during post setting β screw-in anchors or hand-dug post holes preferred within the CRZ.
Specific penalty amounts for this ordinance are not published in a publicly accessible fine schedule. Contact Austin code enforcement directly for current fines, enforcement procedures, and hearing options.
