Manatee County bars broken glass, spikes, and similar materials on fences. Barbed wire is limited to A and A-1 districts (or any agricultural-use fence), and electrified fences are allowed only as an accessory to an agricultural use.
LDC 511.6 material rules: the use of broken glass, spikes, or similar materials on fences is prohibited. Fences charged with electricity are permitted only as accessory to an agricultural use. Barbed-wire fences are permitted only in A and A-1 districts, or in any district when accessory to an agricultural use. Barbed wire may also top security fences in any non-residential district if limited to three strands and set a minimum of 6 feet above the ground. Chain-link fences with sharp protrusions above the top rail count as barbs and are treated the same way.
Prohibited fence materials in residential areas are code violations subject to removal orders and FS Ch. 162 fines up to $250/day (first) or $500/day (repeat).
