Louisville Metro Land Development Code allows wood, vinyl, masonry, and wrought iron in residential zones. Barbed and razor wire are prohibited in residential districts. Local Landmarks districts (Old Louisville, Butchertown, Cherokee Triangle) require preservation review for fence materials.
Fence materials in Jefferson County are regulated by the Louisville Metro Land Development Code (LDC), adopted under KRS Chapter 100 zoning authority. Residential zones (R-1 through R-8A) permit wood, vinyl, composite, wrought iron, tubular steel, masonry (brick/stone), and β in rear and side yards β chain link. Front-yard chain link is restricted in most residential zones and in many traditional neighborhood form districts. Barbed wire and razor wire are prohibited in all residential districts and are generally limited to agricultural, industrial, and secure commercial uses. Louisville has nine local historic preservation districts administered by the Louisville Metro Historic Landmarks and Preservation Districts Commission, including Old Louisville (the largest contiguous Victorian district in the U.S.), West Main Street, Butchertown, Cherokee Triangle, Clifton, Limerick, Parkland, Phoenix Hill, and Portland. Fence work in these districts requires a Certificate of Appropriateness before a building permit will issue.
LDC violation notice from Metro Codes & Regulations with 10 to 30 day cure period. Prohibited barbed wire or razor wire: removal order plus civil penalty. Unapproved material in a local landmark district: Certificate of Appropriateness required retroactively; removal or replacement possible.
