Full Breakdown

Section 34-1742(d) of the Land Development Code requires fences and fence walls to be constructed of conventional and traditional building materials, including but not limited to concrete block, brick, wood, decorative aluminum, iron or steel, chain link, or composite products manufactured specifically for fences and walls. Subsection (b) requires uniform materials, design and color on each property, and additions that do not exceed the existing length must keep that uniformity. Subsection (e) requires the finished side to face the adjoining lot or any abutting right-of-way, though that can be waived administratively on written request. Fences and walls over 25 inches high must follow building permit procedures.

Violations & Fines

Fences must not contain missing materials and must remain substantially vertical. A Land Development Code violation can draw Hearing Examiner fines of $25 to $1,000 per day for a first offense.
