Takoma Park, MD Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Montgomery County zoning and building code, which govern Takoma Park, allow a wide range of standard fencing materials in residential zones: treated or natural wood (cedar, pine, redwood), vinyl/PVC, chain link (with or without privacy slats), wrought iron, aluminum, composite materials, and masonry or stone. Prohibited materials in residential zones include barbed wire, razor wire, concertina wire, electrified wire, and any material that could cause injury to persons coming into incidental contact with the fence. Concrete masonry unit (CMU) block walls used as fences may require a building permit and engineering review. In the Takoma Park Historic District, the Historic Preservation Commission may review fence materials for compatibility with the historic character. Generally, the HPC favors wood picket, wrought iron, and other traditional materials over vinyl or chain link in the historic district. Recycled and salvaged materials may be used if they present a finished, maintained appearance. Temporary materials such as tarps, plywood sheeting, or pallets are not permitted as permanent fencing. Living fences (hedges) are permitted and not subject to material restrictions.
