California Civil Code Β§841 governs boundary fence cost sharing. Adjoining property owners are presumed to share equally in the reasonable cost and maintenance of a good neighbor fence. Prior written notice of at least 30 days is required before constructing or replacing a shared fence. If a neighbor declines to share costs, the initiating owner may proceed independently and seek reimbursement through small claims court. The county does not mediate fence disputes.
