A shared side or rear fence may reach six feet measured toward the adjacent neighbor's property, and where grade differs the same wall may be up to nine feet on the subject-property face, under YLMC 18.10.130.
YLMC 18.10.130 sets the maximum fence and wall height for all locations except the required front yard at six feet measured from top to finished grade on the face of the wall facing an adjacent property, and up to nine feet from top to finished grade on the face facing the subject property. This two-face measurement accommodates grade differences between neighboring lots. The code does not itself resolve private cost-sharing of boundary fences; California Civil Code Section 841 (the Good Neighbor Fence Act) presumes adjoining owners share equal benefit and responsibility for a boundary fence and requires 30 days' written notice before work. Corner-lot fences must also preserve the required sight-distance cut-off area.
Building a boundary fence over six feet toward a neighbor without an approval is a zoning violation; cost disputes are handled civilly, not by the city.
