Pool barriers must be at least 60 inches high with self-closing, self-latching gates. At least two safety features are required under California law.
CVMC Chapter 15.48 and California Health and Safety Code section 115920 et seq. require pool barriers for all residential swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs. Barriers must be at least 60 inches (5 feet) high and must not have openings that allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch at least 54 inches from the ground on the pool side. Under California law, at least two of seven approved safety features must be in place: (1) pool enclosure, (2) removable mesh fencing, (3) approved safety cover, (4) exit alarms on doors, (5) self-closing/self-latching devices, (6) alarm for pool water, (7) other means of protection. Pool barriers must be in place before the pool is filled with water. The building department inspects pool barriers as part of the pool permit process.
Failure to maintain required pool barriers is a safety violation subject to code enforcement. Pool-related violations are prioritized due to drowning risk, especially with children. Fines and required immediate remediation apply.
