Mountain View enforces the California Swimming Pool Safety Act (H&S Code 115920 through 115929) requiring at least two of seven specified drowning prevention safety features for new residential pools and spas. The most common combination is an isolation fence at least 60 inches high with a self-closing, self-latching gate and a pool cover or alarm. Gate latches must be at least 60 inches above the ground or on the pool side of the gate. The fence must prevent a 4 inch sphere from passing through. Existing pools altered in substantial ways must be brought into current compliance. Mountain View Building Division inspects barriers during pool permit final inspection and at permit review for substantial remodels.
