Recreational backyard fires in Avondale follow the 2018 International Fire Code (City Code Sec. 10-40) and Maricopa County air-quality rules. On a declared No-Burn Day, wood-burning recreational fires are prohibited; cooking fires meeting strict limits are the main exception.
Avondale does not have a separate backyard-fire ordinance; it relies on the 2018 International Fire Code adopted in City Code Section 10-40 and on Maricopa County Air Quality Department Rule 314. The adopted fire code addresses recreational fires (small outdoor fires for cooking, warmth or similar purposes) and the clearances and supervision they require. Rule 314 then controls air-quality limits: all outdoor fires are prohibited unless specifically allowed, and on a No-Burn Day, recreational fires and wood-burning fire pits are banned along with residential fireplaces and chimineas. A narrow exception lets cooking fires continue even on a No-Burn Day if the fire is used to cook, smoke or flavor food for immediate human consumption, is generally kept to about two square feet unless a larger fire is needed for food safety, uses only gaseous fuels or clean dry wood, and is extinguished promptly. The City of Avondale directs residents to check the Maricopa County burn status before any wood burning. Practically, this means a wood recreational fire is allowed only on non-No-Burn days and should be attended, kept small, set back from structures and combustibles per the fire code, and have a hose or extinguisher available.
A recreational-fire violation can be enforced under the adopted fire code via City Code Section 10-42, and an illegal outdoor fire on a No-Burn Day is enforced by Maricopa County under Rule 314 with a minimum fine of $200.
