Outdoor burning rules in Avondale, AZ β also called the burn ban, open burning, or fire restriction ordinance β set when you can burn yard waste, debris, or run a recreational fire.
Burning vegetation or trash is not permitted within Avondale city limits, per city guidance. Open burning is governed by Maricopa County Air Quality Department Rule 314, which prohibits all outdoor fires except those it specifically allows and bans burning on declared No-Burn Days.
Avondale does not authorize general backyard burning of yard waste or trash. The City of Avondale advises residents that burning vegetation and/or trash is not permitted within city limits. Because Avondale is in Maricopa County, open burning falls under the Maricopa County Air Quality Department and its Rule 314, Outdoor Fires and Commercial/Institutional Solid Fuel Burning. Rule 314 prohibits all types of outdoor fires except those specifically allowed by the rule, and any allowed open burning requires a burn permit from the county air-quality department. On a declared No-Burn Day, wood burning and open outdoor fires are prohibited, including for individuals and businesses that hold burn permits. Outside of No-Burn Days, permitted open fires are restricted to daytime windows that vary by season (for example, ignited after 10:00 a.m. and out by 5:00 p.m. between October 1 and March 31, and after 6:00 a.m. and out by 6:00 p.m. between April 1 and September 30). Limited exceptions exist for activities such as cooking fires and certain agricultural or ceremonial burning. Because the Phoenix metro area regularly exceeds federal particulate-pollution standards, residents should treat open burning as generally off-limits and rely on green-waste collection rather than burning.
An illegal outdoor fire is enforced by the Maricopa County Air Quality Department under Rule 314 and carries a minimum fine of $200, with higher fines depending on the purpose and materials burned. City fire-code violations may additionally be pursued under City Code Section 10-42.
