Scottsdale prohibits open burning of yard waste, leaves, and debris under both city fire code and Maricopa County air quality regulations (ADEQ Rule 3, Regulation II). Recreational fire pits and outdoor fireplaces are permitted when: fueled by gas, electric, or contained solid fuel; properly installed per building code; maintained with appropriate clearances from structures and combustibles; and not creating a nuisance to neighbors. Fire pit installation requires compliance with the Construction Code and may require a permit depending on the type and fuel source. The city observes Maricopa County burn bans during high fire danger and poor air quality periods. Consumer fireworks are legal during designated periods under Ordinance No. 4157: April 25-May 6, May 20-July 6, December 10-January 3, and during Diwali. Use is restricted to private property. A retail sale permit from the Fire Department is required for any business selling fireworks.
