Scottsdale regulates propane (LPG) storage under the adopted 2018 International Fire Code and NFPA 58; aggregate residential storage over 500 gallons water capacity requires a Scottsdale Fire Department permit and plan review.
Scottsdale has adopted the 2018 International Fire Code (IFC) with amendments under Scottsdale Revised Code Appendix A, which incorporates NFPA 58 (Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code) for all propane installations. Under IFC Chapter 61 and NFPA 58 Β§6.4, aboveground LPG containers must meet the following setbacks: β€125-gallon container β 0 ft to building, 0 ft to property line; 126-500 gal β 10 ft to building, 10 ft to property line; 501-2,000 gal β 25 ft to building, 25 ft to property line. Aggregate residential storage over 500 gallons water capacity requires a Scottsdale Fire Department operational permit (IFC Β§105.6) and plan review by Fire Prevention. Dispenser refill stations, underground tanks, and commercial uses require additional permits and compliance with ADEQ underground-tank rules (ARS Β§49-1001). Arizona Corporation Commission regulates intrastate LP-gas transport and sellers (ARS Β§40-422). Rural Scottsdale properties north of Dynamite Boulevard commonly have larger propane tanks for heating; HOA covenants in Troon, DC Ranch, and Desert Mountain may impose tank-screening or location restrictions.
Operating without a required fire permit (>500 gal): stop-use order and up to $1,500 administrative fine under Scottsdale Revised Code Β§19-25. Setback violations requiring tank relocation: owner cost plus $500+ permit re-review. Unpermitted commercial dispensing or repeated violations: misdemeanor referral under IFC Β§109 and ARS Β§13-2907 (endangering). ADEQ UST violations up to $10,000/day for leaks.
