Fire pit rules in Avondale, AZ — also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances — cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Avondale has no standalone fire-pit ordinance; backyard fire pits are governed by the 2018 International Fire Code adopted in City Code Sec. 10-40 and by Maricopa County air-quality rules. On a county No-Burn Day, wood-burning fire pits and chimineas may not be used at all.
Avondale does not publish a dedicated fire-pit section. Instead, Section 10-40 of the City Code adopts the 2018 International Fire Code, together with the January 19, 2021 Avondale Amendments, as the city's Fire Code; recreational fires and portable outdoor fireplaces are addressed there. Layered on top of the fire code are Maricopa County Air Quality Department rules, because Avondale sits within Maricopa County. Under Maricopa County Rule 314, all outdoor fires are prohibited unless specifically allowed, and on a declared No-Burn Day, wood burning in residential fireplaces, chimineas, outdoor fire pits and similar outdoor fires is banned, including for permit holders. The City of Avondale's own guidance reinforces this, advising residents to check the Maricopa County Air Quality Department's burn status before using a wood-burning fireplace or outdoor fire pit, because wood burning may be restricted on certain days. Gas-fueled fire pits (gas logs and gaseous fuels) are not subject to the No-Burn Day wood-burning ban. Residents who burn wood should keep the fire attended and a means of extinguishment on hand, follow the manufacturer's clearances for portable units, and confirm the current No-Burn Day status before lighting any wood fire.
A fire-code violation is enforceable under City Code Section 10-42 (generally a class one misdemeanor, up to a $2,500 fine and six months in jail, or a $250 civil penalty). Separately, an illegal outdoor fire on a No-Burn Day is enforced by Maricopa County under Rule 314, which carries a minimum fine of $200.
