Small recreational backyard fires are allowed in unincorporated Sacramento County when conducted in approved containers with proper clearance, except on SMAQMD no-burn days. Only clean, dry, seasoned firewood may be used.
Per California Fire Code 307 and Metro Fire regulations, backyard recreational fires must be contained in a noncombustible pit, chiminea, or approved device under 3 feet in diameter. Fires must be 15 feet from any structure, fence, or combustible vegetation. Only natural firewood may be burned; trash, treated wood, construction debris, and leaves are prohibited under SMAQMD Rule 421. Fires are banned on Spare the Air days from November through February and during Red Flag Warnings. An adult must supervise the fire continuously and have water or an extinguisher ready. Large bonfires require a permit from Metro Fire District.
SMAQMD fines 100 to 500 dollars for burning on no-burn days. Fire code violations can trigger 100 dollar administrative citations and extinguishment orders.
