Backyard recreational fires in Spokane must use approved containments, burn only clean firewood, stay 25 feet from structures, and comply with SRCAA burn ban status. Fires over 3 feet require a permit.
Backyard recreational fires in Spokane are regulated under SMC Chapter 10.04 and IFC Section 307. Allowed fires include those in manufactured fire pits, chimineas, outdoor fireplaces, and ground pits under 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet tall. Fuel must be clean, dry firewood; yard debris, trash, pressure-treated wood, and painted wood are prohibited. Minimum clearance is 25 feet from any structure, deck, fence, or combustible materials (15 feet for manufactured appliances per manufacturer specs). An adult must supervise continuously with a charged garden hose or extinguisher. SRCAA burn bans override all recreational fire permissions; during stage 1 or stage 2 bans, even small recreational fires are prohibited. Larger bonfires (over 3 feet) require a permit from Spokane Fire Department and are generally only approved for special events.
Spokane Fire Department may order extinguishment and issue citations. Fines $250-$1,000. Violations during burn bans trigger SRCAA penalties up to $10,000.
