Outdoor burning rules in Spokane, WA β also called the burn ban, open burning, or fire restriction ordinance β set when you can burn yard waste, debris, or run a recreational fire.
Outdoor burning of yard debris is banned year-round within Spokane city limits under SRCAA Regulation I. Only recreational fires with clean firewood are allowed, subject to burn ban status.
The Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency (SRCAA) Regulation I Section 6.04 prohibits all outdoor burning of yard debris, land-clearing debris, construction materials, and household trash within Spokane city limits and designated urban growth areas. This ban is permanent and not subject to seasonal variations. Only small recreational fires using clean, dry firewood in approved containments are permitted, and even these are suspended during stage 1 or stage 2 burn bans declared by SRCAA. Burn bans are frequent during summer wildfire season (typically June-October) and winter air stagnation events when the Spokane Valley experiences temperature inversions trapping smoke. Residents must use curbside yard waste collection or haul to the Waste-to-Energy Facility. Agricultural and forestry burning requires DNR permits and occurs outside city limits only.
SRCAA penalties start at $1,000 for first offense and can reach $10,000 per day for continuing violations. Fire Department may respond and issue additional fines.
