Tuolumne County requires brush and vegetation clearance under both state PRC Β§4291 (100 ft defensible space for structures) and a county Hazardous Vegetation Ordinance that extends to vacant parcels adjacent to roads and driveways.
Tuolumne County adopted a Hazardous Vegetation Ordinance that goes beyond existing state mandates. While PRC Β§4291 requires 100 feet of defensible space around structures, the county ordinance also requires vegetation maintenance on undeveloped vacant lots and parcels adjacent to roads, driveways, and road easements. The county worked with CAL FIRE to develop the ordinance after years of devastating wildfires including the 2013 Rim Fire. Property owners must maintain Zone 1 (0-30 ft from structures: lean, clean, green) and Zone 2 (30-100 ft: reduced fuel loads). CAL FIRE conducts inspections and the county can abate hazardous vegetation and lien the property for costs.
PRC Β§4291 violation: up to $1,000 fine per day. County abatement: cost billed to property owner plus administrative fees, recorded as lien on property.
