Cumberland County sets no ordinance requiring residents to clear brush or maintain defensible space; there is no state statute imposing it either. The N.C. Forest Service promotes voluntary wildfire preparedness through the Firewise USA program, especially relevant in the fire-adapted Sandhills longleaf-pine landscape around Fayetteville and Fort Liberty. If you clear and burn vegetation, 15A NCAC 02D .1903 requires land-clearing burns to sit at least 500 feet from any dwelling not on your property and 250 feet from public roads, only between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., with a Forest Service permit.
There is no penalty for failing to clear brush, but illegal burning of cleared vegetation is enforced by the N.C. Division of Air Quality and the fire marshal.
