Placer County Code Chapter 9.32 (Hazardous Vegetation and Combustible Material Abatement), effective May 21, 2020, requires 100 feet of defensible space around all structures, consistent with California Public Resources Code Β§4291. Local fire agencies inspect annually.
Under Placer County Code Chapter 9.32 (Part 4), property owners must maintain defensible space to the standards of PRC Β§4291 and the State Fire Marshal's defensible-space regulations. Key requirements include annual grasses and weeds maintained at 4 inches or less, tree limbs cleared 6 feet up from the ground, removal of vegetation within 10 feet of chimney/stovepipe outlets, and dead/dying wood removed from trees overhanging structures. The ordinance gives fire officials authority to require abatement beyond 100 feet in extraordinary high-hazard situations. Local fire agencies β including CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit, Placer Hills Fire Protection District, South Placer Fire, and Newcastle Fire β conduct inspections. Failure to abate after notice triggers County abatement at the owner's cost plus administrative fees.
Non-compliance after notice may result in administrative fines, County-performed abatement billed to the owner, and a lien placed on the property. PRC Β§4291 violations can also carry criminal penalties under state law.
