Fire pit rules in Collier County, FL — also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances — cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
Collier County's fire prevention policy exempts small recreational fires and cooking fires from the open-burning permit, as long as they are not used to dispose of vegetation or trash, are conducted safely, and stay on your own property.
Collier's Fire Prevention Code Policy OPB 09-1 requires permits for open outdoor fires, incinerators, and outdoor fireplaces, but exempts 'cooking fires and small recreational fires not intended for vegetation or rubbish disposal when conducted safely and on the property of the subject.' Backyard fire pits therefore need no permit in normal conditions. Keep the fire attended and controlled, and keep a clear zone free of burnable material around it. During a declared drought emergency, all recreational fires—campfires and bonfires—are prohibited countywide even though they are permit-free the rest of the year.
Unpermitted vegetation/rubbish burning, or any recreational fire kindled during a declared drought burn ban, is a civil infraction under the Collier County Consolidated Code Enforcement Ordinance.
