Prince George's County allows fire pits and portable outdoor fireplaces at single-family homes and townhouses under Subtitle 11-268. Fires must stay at least 30 feet from any structure, be attended by an adult, and burn only dry firewood.
Under County Code Subtitle 11, Section 11-268, fires in a fixed or portable fire pit, chiminea, or portable outdoor fireplace are permitted at single-family dwellings and townhouses. The fire must be at least 30 feet from any structure and 30 feet from any road, sidewalk, or public way, and is not allowed on any balcony or deck. Only dry natural wood may be burned; yard waste, garbage, plastic, rubber, and other smoke-producing materials are prohibited. The fire must be attended at all times by a person 18 years or older in direct view until it is completely extinguished, and a fire extinguisher or charged hose must be available. Gas or propane devices have separate distance rules.
Violations of Section 11-268 carry a maximum penalty of up to $1,000 and/or up to 6 months in jail. The Fire Marshal may order any nuisance or hazardous fire extinguished immediately.
