Fire pit rules in Fort Lauderdale, FL — also called outdoor burning, recreational fire, or open flame ordinances — cover fuel types, clearances, and when burning is allowed.
An outdoor fire pit is treated as a recreational open-burning device. Florida rule 62-256.700, F.A.C., allows attended fires in an 'outdoor fireplace, or other contained outdoor heating or cooking device' burning clean wood, and Broward County requires fire-authority approval. Fire pits and ground fires are not permitted on the City Beach or in City parks without authorization.
Fort Lauderdale has no separate fire-pit ordinance; a backyard fire pit is regulated as a recreational open-burning device under Broward County Code Chapter 27, Article IX and the Florida Administrative Code. State rule 62-256.700(10), F.A.C., expressly allows 'recreational open burning of vegetative debris and untreated wood in a campfire, ceremonial bonfire, outdoor fireplace, or other contained outdoor heating or cooking device,' so long as it is attended and extinguished before leaving. Only clean wood and vegetative debris may be burned; trash, treated wood, and plastics are prohibited. On public land the rules are stricter: ground fires are prohibited in all City park areas unless authorized by the Department Director and the City's Fire Marshal, and the Fort Lauderdale Beach Rules prohibit open fires and fireworks on the City Beach outside authorized special events. Larger fires must still observe Broward County's 300-foot building and 150-foot highway setbacks.
An unauthorized fire pit that creates a nuisance, burns prohibited materials, or is used on the beach or in a park can be cited under the Florida Fire Prevention Code, Broward County Code Chapter 27, Rule 62-256.700, F.A.C., or the City's park and beach regulations. Penalties include code-enforcement fines and abatement.
