Takoma Park, MD Fire Regulations: Fire Pit Rules (2026)

Takoma Park follows Montgomery County fire pit and recreational fire regulations, enforced by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services. Residential fire pits, chimineas, and fire bowls must be placed at least 10 feet from any home and 3 feet from mulch or combustible materials. A 3-foot clear diameter should be maintained around all fire appliances. Fire pits and bowls should not be used on balconies or decks. A connected garden hose must be kept nearby. Only dry, aged natural wood is permitted as fuel. Fires larger than 3 feet in diameter or those that are part of special events or large gatherings may require permits from the Montgomery County Division of Fire Prevention and Code Compliance and the Department of Environmental Protection. Fires are prohibited on Code Orange or Code Red air quality days. All recreational fires must have a supervisor who is at least 18 years old present at all times. Fires must not produce dense smoke exceeding 20% opacity for more than 3 minutes per 60-minute period. Winds must be forecasted below 12 mph. Cooled ashes (after 24 hours) must be stored in metal containers only. Residents must call Fire and Rescue Services at 240-683-6520 before igniting a recreational fire. Pets and children must be kept at a safe distance.
