All consumer fireworks are banned in unincorporated Yakima County and in the City of Yakima. The only legal fireworks in the valley are sold and discharged on the Yakama Reservation, plus permitted professional public displays.
Yakima County Code Chapter 8.46 makes it unlawful to store, sell, use, possess, or discharge fireworks anywhere in the unincorporated county, with no legal discharge dates. The City of Yakima has banned fireworks since a 1992 special election (Yakima Municipal Code 10.15.015). Consumer 1.4G fireworks that are legal elsewhere in Washington under RCW 70.77 are prohibited here because the state lets counties and cities pass stricter rules; under RCW 70.77.250(4) such an ordinance takes effect no sooner than one year after adoption. The Yakama Nation, as sovereign land, sets its own rules and allows sales.
Possessing, selling, or discharging fireworks in unincorporated Yakima County or the City of Yakima can bring a fine of up to $1,000, and some discharge violations are charged as misdemeanors under state law.
