Chesterfield County, VA Fire Regulations: Fireworks (2026)

Sec. 10-3 amends the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code's Chapter 56 (Explosives and Fireworks) for Chesterfield. Sec. 1 flatly prohibits possessing, storing, selling, using or handling 'permissible fireworks' as the state code defines them, anywhere in the county, a stricter local stance than the state default. Sec. 1 backs that up by making it unlawful to 'store, possess, offer for sale, expose for sale, sell at retail or use or explode any fireworks or pyrotechnic special effect materials,' except under the county's own permit rules for supervised displays.

Those rules sit in Secs. 2: a permit is required for any fireworks or pyrotechnic special-effects display, the application must be submitted in writing at least 15 days before the date of the display or discharge, and the resulting permit is good only for the terms, conditions and dates it states, it cannot be transferred or stretched past its listed dates. Because the fireworks amendments sit inside the same Sec. 10-3 fire prevention code, violations carry the article's general enforcement scheme: the fire marshal and his assistants can arrest, serve warrants and issue summonses under Sec. 10-7, and Sec. 10-6 sets the penalty as a Class 1 misdemeanor, with each day of continuing violation charged separately.
