All fireworks are illegal in the unincorporated areas of Sonoma County, including state-approved 'Safe and Sane' devices and sparklers. There is no legal-sale window. Violators may be arrested, fined, or jailed, with penalties increasing for dangerous fireworks. Permitted public displays require a separate Permit Sonoma fireworks permit.
Permit Sonoma's Fire Prevention and Hazardous Materials Division states plainly that 'All fireworks are illegal' in the unincorporated areas of Sonoma County. Unlike some California cities that allow state-approved 'Safe and Sane' fireworks, the unincorporated County permits none of them, year-round. This includes sparklers, fountains, and any consumer device. The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office enforces the ban strictly around the Fourth of July within unincorporated areas.
Fireworks in California are governed by the State Fireworks Law, Health and Safety Code sections 12500 et seq., which classifies devices as 'dangerous fireworks' or 'Safe and Sane' and lets local jurisdictions impose stricter bans. Sonoma County exercises that authority to prohibit all of them. Permit Sonoma warns that a person caught using fireworks 'can be arrested and you may be fined, sentenced to jail or both,' and that 'fines and penalties increase if you are found in possession of fireworks classified as dangerous.'
The only lawful fireworks are professionally operated public displays authorized in advance through a permit issued by Permit Sonoma. Importing fireworks from another county where 'Safe and Sane' devices are sold does not make them legal to use in unincorporated Sonoma County. Given the County's catastrophic wildfire history (Tubbs, Kincade, Glass fires), enforcement is treated as a public-safety priority.
Possession or use of any fireworks in the unincorporated area is illegal. Per Permit Sonoma, violators may be arrested and may be fined, sentenced to jail, or both; penalties increase for dangerous fireworks. State Health and Safety Code section 12500+ governs classification and additional penalties.
