Iowa legalized consumer fireworks in 2017, but every Johnson County community sharply limits when you may set them off. Rural unincorporated areas allow July 3 through 5, while Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty permit only a few days around July 4 and New Year's, never on public property.
Consumer fireworks are legal to buy and use in Iowa under Iowa Code section 727.2, but the same statute lets a county or city restrict their use, and Johnson County's communities do. In unincorporated rural areas, discharge is allowed July 3, 4, and 5 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Iowa City bans use except on a handful of designated days around July 4, never on streets, parks, or other public property, with a minimum $250 fine. Coralville and North Liberty allow only July 3, July 4, and New Year's Eve into January 1. Professional displays require a State Fire Marshal permit.
Setting off fireworks on a banned day, at a banned hour, or on public property is a simple misdemeanor carrying a fine of at least $250, plus civil liability for any injury or damage caused.
