Consumer fireworks are legal in unincorporated Whatcom County only on July 3-5 and December 31, within set hours. Bellingham bans all consumer fireworks year-round, and other cities set their own rules.
A 2015 Whatcom County ordinance limits when consumer (1.4G) fireworks may be discharged in unincorporated areas: July 3 and 5 from 6 to 11 p.m., July 4 from 6 p.m. to midnight, and December 31 from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Outside those windows, discharge is illegal. Bellingham prohibits the sale and discharge of all consumer fireworks; Ferndale, Lynden, and Blaine each set their own rules, so a firework legal in one spot can be banned across a city line. When a burn ban is in effect, the county executive may suspend all fireworks. Tribal stands and the Lynden fair operate under separate authority.
Discharging outside the legal dates or in a city that bans fireworks brings civil fines and possible criminal charges. Illegal fireworks may be seized by the sheriff or state fire marshal.
