Jefferson County (Louisville Metro) follows LMCO Β§ 94.40, which restricts consumer fireworks significantly beyond Kentucky state law. Aerial devices, firecrackers, and most 'Class C' items permitted by KRS 227.702 are banned locally. Only non-aerial ground items (sparklers, fountains, ground spinners) are allowed for adults 18+ with a 200-foot setback.
Under LMCO Β§ 94.40, Louisville Metro (covering all of Jefferson County's unincorporated areas and most incorporated municipalities under Metro Code) bans the sale, possession, use, and ignition of aerial fireworks, firecrackers, and any fireworks with wings, fins, explosive labels, or mechanisms designed to cause flight. While Kentucky state law (KRS 227.702) permits 'Class C consumer fireworks' more broadly, Louisville's local ordinance is stricter. Permitted items are limited to ground-based novelties: sparklers, smoke devices, ground spinners, and fountains β usable only by persons 18+ with a 200-foot setback from any structure or vehicle. Public fireworks displays require permits under §§ 94.31 et seq. Persons under 18 may not sell, possess with intent to sell, or be employed in fireworks sales.
Fines up to $500 for sales/gifting to minors. Police and fire officials may confiscate and destroy illegal fireworks, issue civil fines, and file criminal charges.
