Sonoma County's locally amended fire code requires an approved seismic anchoring system on all permanently installed propane/LPG containers, and limits any one LP-gas installation to 2,000 gallons water capacity in areas restricted by land-use and zoning standards.
Sonoma County first added the seismic anchoring requirement as California Fire Code Section 6103.3.1 in its 2016 Chapter 13 fire code amendments (Sonoma County Code Section 13-17). The current Sonoma County Fire Code, adopted by Sonoma County Fire District Ordinance No. 2023-01 with the 2022 California Fire Code, carries it forward as Section 6107.5 and amends Section 6104.2 to cap the aggregate capacity of any one LP-gas installation at 2,000 gallons water capacity. Permit Sonoma's LPG Tank Hold Downs bulletin accepts bolting, strapping, or anchoring: quarter-inch galvanized or stainless cable, 1.25 x .031 stainless strap with 4,750-pound minimum tensile strength, and anchors at least two feet below grade; flood-zone tanks also need earth anchors.
Violations of the locally amended fire code are misdemeanors punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 or imprisonment not exceeding six months, or both, under California Fire Code Section 112.4 as amended.
