New Orleans regulates propane through its adopted Fire Prevention Code (International Fire Code). Larger LP-gas storage needs a Fire Department operational permit, and multi-family residents cannot store or use LP-gas grills and cylinders on balconies or within 10 feet of the building.
The city's Fire Prevention Code adopts the International Fire Code, which governs liquefied petroleum gas: an operational permit is required to store, use, handle or dispense LP-gas above the code's threshold (generally more than 500 gallons aggregate water capacity), and cylinders must be stored upright, secured, and away from ignition sources. For homes, the practical rule is the multi-family cooking restriction: LP-gas and charcoal grills and their cylinders may not be used or kindled on balconies or under overhangs, or stored there, in buildings other than one- and two-family dwellings. Small consumer barbecue cylinders (typically 20 lb) at a single-family home do not need a city permit.
Storing or using LP-gas in violation of the fire code, or without a required operational permit, can bring NOFD citations and orders to remove the hazard.
